»Classics for the Classroom Posters:
The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch, was commissioned by an unknown lay patron. It was completed sometime between 1490 and 1510. The painting is a triptych. It was painted on three panels where the outer two panels could fold in to cover it. On the left panel God is introducing Adam to Eve. The left panel depicts God presenting Adam to Eve, while the central panel is a broad panorama of sexually engaged nude figures, fantastical animals, oversized fruit and hybrid stone formations. The right panel is a hellscape and portrays the torments of damnation.
